PDL Week 2 Recap

PDL Week 2 Recap

After another week of Predictions and good prep, Week 2 is in the books. Several teams improved and it is looking like it is going to be a great season. However it is still too early to tell how things will shape up in the future.

Game Recap:

DEP vs. HEH : 5-0

NWN vs. VAV: 5-0

BFS vs. TOT: 6-0

COG vs. SLC: 2-0

BEN vs. NJJ: 5-0

ITA vs. PIP: 3-0

LOL vs. HFW: 0-5

JAX vs. BPL: 2-0

MID vs. BAL: 0-3

MIL vs. AUK: 2-0

MIN vs. DCC: 3-0

This week was about learning how your team meshes together and the limitless potential that it can have possess. Every team looked stronger and I can’t wait to see how each team grows as the season continues. There were a lot of 0-0 teams fighting for their first win and a bunch of undefeated teams going up against each other.

If you get a chance I’d check out the SLC vs COG game. The game highlights some great prep, and the battle comes down to a damage roll. Very close game that is exciting from beginning to end.

It looks like week 1 was beginners luck as no one correctly picked all 11 games this week. There were 2 with 10 and a bunch with 9 but no one perfect. This is partly due to the “upsets” that happened. I’m defining upsets in the pick’ems as a team that got less votes to win than the other team and won. JAX won over BPL (7-9), BAL won over MID (6-10) and MIN won over DCC (5-10). No one was able to correctly predict all 3 of these games. Who knows what will happen in the future.

There were only 2 trades this week. LOL dropped Scrafty to Free Agency and picked up Dragalge. TOT dropped Charizard to Free Agency and picked up Alolan Raticate. Both of these trades help round out the teams. I’m especially excited for Alolan Raticate because I believe there is a lot of untapped potential in that mon.

Interview with Sparky!

This week I’m joined by the Man from Down Under, Sparky!

C9: Thank you Sparky! for taking the time to answer these questions for the fans. Let’s start at the beginning how did your draft go? Were you happy with your team?

Sparky!: No worries! I really should be thanking you though, for all these articles you have been doing weekly. They are all very well written, I always look forward to them!

I feel like my draft went pretty well. The only Pokémon I drafted that weren’t on my first choice list were Mega Blastoise, Conkeldurr and Meowstic. I originally had planned on drafting Milotic, Donphan and Mega Absol but they all got picked up around the same time so that’s how I ended up with Mega Blastoise. I always had it in mind as a backup because it covered my need for a bulky water type (Milotic), rapid spinner (Donphan) and my S-Tier slot (Mega Absol) all in one Pokemon.

C9: What are your goals for this season of PDL?

SPK: My main goal is to have fun, I watch a lot of draft league on YouTube and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to participate in one myself. Don’t mistake that as a sign of weakness though, I am here to win this thing!

C9: Who are most looking forward to battling this season?

SPK: I’d say that I’m most looking forward to my week 4 battle with Hydra. We battled in the UUTC and it was unfortunately very one sided. I think that Hydra is a really good battler and our match up has the potential to be very close and entertaining.

C9: Is there anyone you are glad you don’t have to face in the regular season?

SPK: Not really, I believe that I have the team and the skills to beat any coach or team. It’s just a matter of me playing to my potential.

C9: Since you are from Australia do you find that it is tougher to schedule and play your matches?

SPK: Definately! I’m normally either working or sleeping when most of America is awake so I try to message my opponent as early as possible in the week to organize a time.

C9: I know you have had a rocky start to the season, playing against 2 teams that are currently 2-0 right now, but do you feel you can turn it around?

SPK: I know I can. I feel that in both matches I had prepped well and had I done things a little differently there is every chance I could be 2-0 right now. I can see where I’ve made my mistakes and all I can do is learn from them.

C9: Were there any secret techs that you brought for your matchups that you didn’t get to showcase?

SPK: Yeah but I can’t give away all my secrets! I had a couple of mons prepped for Seth Vilo’s Ditto. KhalDrogo (Salamence) was one I got to showcase, the one I didn’t was TheFluffiest (Whimsicott). She was scarfed with just enough speed EVs to outspeed scarf Swellow if Ditto transformed into it.

C9: Who would you say is the mon you are most excited to use on your team this year?

SPK: I would have to say Bazinga! (Togedemaru), I really wanted it as my Tier 5 and I’m so glad i was able to draft it. I’ve a had a little bit of interest from other coaches but unfortunately Bazinga! Is not up for trade, I have so many sets I still want to try out.

C9: Let’s learn about you as a pokemon Fan. When did you start listening to PUCL?

SPK: It’s a bit hard for me to remember exactly but it was around early 2015. I’d just started working on a new job site that didn’t care if I wore earphones while I worked. I was hooked, and I’ve since gone back and listened to the entire back catalogue.

C9: What pokemon generation did you start with?

SPK: Gen 1! But I’m definitely not a genwunner! I’ve recently played through all the old games on the virtual console and had a great, nostalgic time doing so.

C9: What is your favorite region?

SPK: Ok so I’m gonna cheat here, Johto will always have a special place in my heart. I played silver waaay to much as a kid and soul silver was the game that really got me back into Pokémon after a Gen 3 hiatus. That being said I think my favorite region is Kalos, there was just so much attention to detail in that region. Every route was unique, every town felt different and every gym was just so grand it was awe inspiring. It was everything that 10 year old me wanted.

C9: Who is your favorite pokemon?

SPK: This is a difficult question to answer because I have a hard time picking a favorite anything! This changes constantly but right now I would have to say Slurpuff. I love it in the anime and competitively it’s a beast! Really it’s just an all round awesome Pokémon! Buttercup was an essential part of my UUTC team and I wouldn’t have made it to the final without her. PuffDaddy hasn’t done much yet in the PDL but his time will come.

C9: If you had to pick: Attack or Special Attack?

SPK: Definately attack, although I may answer differently if they ever come up with a special belly drum…

C9: What is your battle style:  Stall/Hyper Offense/Bulky Offense/Balance?

SPK: I can play all styles depending on who I’m facing or what Pokémon I am building a team around. However I much prefer a fast paced game, so stall is something I would rather not play or play against.

C9: Do you prefer Speed or Trick Room?

SPK: I’m gonna say trick room but not because I love trick room specifically. I really just love a good gimmick!

C9: What is your favorite Weather; Hail/Sand/Rain or Sun?

SPK: Probably sun. I think it sees the least amount of play this gen and I always root for the underdog!

C9: Electric/Misty/Grassy or Psychic Terrain?

SPK: Not psychic! I lost the UUTC because of psychic terrain! (It may have also have  had something to do with the fact that Whimsicott is a god-tier battler!)

C9: Favorite status to inflict: Sleep/Freeze/Paralysis/Burn or Poison?

SPK: Sleep. I have fond memories of playing red and blue with my sister and using Gen 1’s broken sleep mechanics to my advantage. I would continuously put her Pokémon to sleep with my Venusaur without her ever having a chance to do anything in return.

C9: Have you watched the Pokemon anime? If yes, what is your favorite Theme song?

SPK: I have but I am not a regular watcher. My problem is that I want to watch them all in order. Every time I try, I get burnt out around Johto. Then a few months later I start over again and the vicious cycle begins. So seeings how I have started at the beginning so many times I guess my favorite theme is the original… “I wanna be the very best, like no one ever was!”

C9: Thank you Sparky, for joining us today! Tune in next week for another PDL Weekly Recap. Happy Battling.
